Tips for keeping your fruits and veggies fresh

Best tips & tricks for fresh fruit & veggies

Ai…There’s nothing worse than finding your delicious fruits and veggies languishing limply in your crisper drawer because you forgot them, or didn’t know how to store it. How to make sure your fruit and veggies will stay fresh? With these tips your products will keep their nutrients and you’ll never have to throw anything away. YAY.

Avocado
Avocado fans probably never have to deal with this problem, but what to do when you have half of an avocado left? The best way to preserve an avocado is to keep the kernel in it, sprinkle it with lemon juice and store it in a sealed box in the fridge. The lemon juice (full of vitamin C), lack of oxygen and the cool temperature will stop the ripening process.

Bananas
Bananas stay longer fresh if you keep them in the bunch. To be precise: 3-5 days longer. Even better: wrap the stems in aluminium foil. Bananas release ethylene gas, especially at the top, which makes them ripen faster. Pears and apples also release this substance. So keep these fruits as far away as possible from other fruit and vegetable pieces.

Strawberries, raspberries & berries
The trick is to keep berries cold and dry so they won’t mold. Wash the berries only right before you’re going to eat them. To keep these fruits fresh, keep them in the fridge with a paper towel in the bag.

Lettuce
The above trick is also great for keeping your lettuce fresh and green. Put a paper towel in the bag of lettuce to prevent wilted lettuce leaves. Too late? Soak the lettuce in ice cold water for 10 minutes.

Apples & potatoes
Apples are best stored in a cardboard box in a cold, dark place. Keep them with your potatoes for example. It’s a smart thing to do, because apples help potatoes remain firm and prevent them from sprouting.

Mushrooms
Store mushrooms in a paper bag instead of the plastic box you bought it in. Plastic makes them slimy – the paper keeps the mushrooms dry and fresh.

What to put in the fridge?
Unsure about which products you should keep in the refrigerator? Leafy vegetables, cabbages, kale, cauliflower, broccoli, leeks, carrots and celery belong in the fridge. Keep tomatoes, kiwi, apricots, mangos, onions, squash, melons and pears out of the fridge. The cold will ruin their flavour. It’s best to keep products such as peppers, grapes and citrus fruits in a cool place, but not your refrigerator.
